Description from book:

Dear Reader,

Life is great for me. I have my chicory coffee, my warm beignets, and my best friend on the cell phone. Once the sun goes down, I am the baddest thing prowling the night: I command the elements, and I know no fear. For centuries, I’ve protected the innocent and watched over mankind, making sure they are safe in a world where nothing is ever certain. All I want in return is a hot babe in a red dress, who wants nothing more from me than one night.

Instead, I get a runaway Mardi Gras float that tries to turn me into roadkill and a beautiful woman who saves my life but can’t remember where she put my pants. Flamboyant and extravagant, Sunshine Runningwold should be the perfect woman for me. She wants nothing past tonight, no ties, no long-term commitments.

But every time I look at her, I start yearning for dreams that I buried centuries ago. With her unconventional ways and ability to baffle me, Sunshine is the one person I find myself needing. But for me to love her would mean her death. I am cursed never to know peace or happiness – not so long as my enemy waits in the night to destroy us both.

-Talon of the Morrigantes

My Thoughts:

So far, this is the only Dark-Hunter book with a reincarnated soul. Sunshine has the same soul as Talon’s human wife, Nynia. This makes the relationship between Sunshine and Talon very interesting. Sunshine has always been interested in Celtic things. She has a Celtic tattoo – and had at one time attempted to make a torc identical to the one that Talon wears. She also has these odd memory flashes of Talon with another woman – his wife Nynia. Sunshine dealt with this pretty well, but I guess that she comes from a family that is at ease with this type of phenomena. Of course, this reincarnated soul stuff makes Sunshine doubt whether Talon loves her or the idea of Nynia. Regardless of this, the god Camulus has no intention of allowing Talon to find love. Camulus has cursed Talon back when he was human. Talon had killed his son in error after the murder of his aunt and uncle – which was all part of a plot by Talon’s cousin to eliminate the aunt and uncle and Talon and his sister. In other words, Talon has many people after him. But Sunshine is determined that she and Talon can have a life together – enough to try and take on Artemis and Camulus.

All in all, I liked this story. Talon and Sunshine definitely fit together well.

Things Learned in this Book:

  • Artemis has sent Valerius to New Orleans to take Kyrian’s place as a Dark-Hunter. Valerius is Kyrian’s mortal enemy.
  • Zarek of Moesia, an ancient Greco-Roman slave, comes for Mardi Gras duty. He is a feeder who prays on human blood. He is considered to by psychotic and unstable. No one trust him. He has been kept by Acheron in Alaska. Zarek’s left hand has claws. He can’t drive.
  • Talon is a celt. His best friend is Wulf, a Viking.
  • Styxx, Camulus – a Celtic god, and Dionysus are working together to wreak havoc and neutralize Talon and the Dark-Hunters in order to weaken Acheron and release Apollymi. They want to release Apollymi at Mardi Gras when the barrier between the real world and Kalosis would be thin enough to breech.
  • Styxx seems to want to end his own existence.
  • Dionysus, who is supposedly retired, and Camulus want to reclaim their godhoods. They need Apollymi and Acheron’s blood to do this (to set Apollymi free, I believe).
  • Acheron alone holds key to releasing Apollymi.
  • Styxx believes he is the only creature alive who can deliver Acheron.
  • Talon has control over the elements. Light and dark belong to Apollo (who is retired). Apollo won’t tolerate a Dark-Hunter out during the day.
  • Nick Gautier becomes Talon’s part-time squire after Kyrian gave up his Dark-Hunter duties.
  • Selena Laurens (Tabitha and Amanda’s sister) appears in her tarot card stand. Selena is Grace Alexander’s best friend.
  • No one really knows anything about Acheron, although there is a great deal of speculation.
  • Dark-Hunters’ powers are drained when they are in the company of other Dark-Hunters. This is the only reference I have seen to this, I believe.
  • There is massive animosity between Valerius and Zarek. Nick will not help Valerius in any way – due to the fact that Valerius is Kyrian’s mortal enemy.
  • Kyrian is no longer a Dark-Hunter, so he isn’t bound by Artemis’ restrictions. However, he still retains most of his powers.
  • Dark-Hunters can be easily possessed by ghosts.
  • We meet Vane and Fang who are Katagaria Were-wolves and brothers who offer to help Talon and Acheron. Strati are Katagaria soldiers. Their enemies are Arcadian Sentinels. Pregnant Katagaria are Daimon magnets. Were-Hunters’ souls keep Daimons alive longer than humans (not sure if whe learn this fact here). Stefan is from Vane and Fang’s pack, but is Vane’s mortal enemy. Vane Kattalakis is a Katagari Slayer.
  • Talon’s emotions are the key to his powers. If he loses control, he loses his Dark-Hunter immortality.
  • Shadedom is the hellish existence for any Dark-Hunters who dies without their soul.
  • Sunshine seems to be the reincarnation of Talon’s wife, Nynia, from his human life.
  • Morrigan and Camulus are Celt gods that Talon’s people worshipped.
  • Artemis tells Acheron that she owns him.
  • Styxx is pretending to be Acheron. He isn’t found out for a while.
  • Selena tells Sunshine about the Dark-Hunters. Talon would not tell her.
  • Nick discovers that Ash was born in 9548 BC. Nick mentions that Acheron can go out in daylight.
  • Talon heals by absorbing pain and injuries into his body. He can’t absorb his own pain. Acheron heals Talon. Acheron then vanishes from Talon’s presence.
  • Katoteros is a small nether region that exists between dimensions. This is Acheron’s private domain.
  • In a conversation with Artemis, Acheron mentions that Styxx is his brother.
  • Ceara is Talon’s sister from his human life. She has always been with him. In this book, she agrees it is time to be reborn – probably because Talon now has Sunshine.
  • Vane isn’t the same as other Katagaria in his pack. We do not find out how he is different.
  • Talon’s cousin, Murrdyd, set him up in his human life and killed his aunt and uncle. He also planned the sacrifices of Ceara and Talon.
  • The Rytis is warp space.
  • Bride McTierney is a regular client of Sunshine’s. She is dating Taylor. Vane sees Bride for the first time. He doesn’t approach her, however.
  • Dionysus likes to be called Dion.
  • Dionysus is Artemis’ brother.
  • Dev Peltier is the bouncer at Sanctuary. He is a quadruplet. He has a bow and arrow tattoo like the Dark-Hunters, but isn’t one.
  • Eros and Pscyhe appear. They are at Sanctuary.
  • Wren plays pool with Nick at Sanctuary, but doesn’t talk to anyone.
  • Eros is supposed to vaporize any Dark-Hunters he runs across. Eros can shoot lead arrows to make people fall out of love. This will not work with soul mates, however. Psyche gives Sunshine advice about her relationship with Talon. Psyche tells Sunshine how to call Artemis.
  • Daimons attack Vane’s Katagaria clan. Vane’s sister, Anya,  and her pups were killed. Talon was unreachable to help.
  • Sunshine’s grandmother gives her the Marker Medallion. This medallion gives her the protection of the Morrigan.
  • Acheron barters two weeks of submission to Artemis for Talon’s soul.
  • Styxx is revealed to be Acheron’s twin brother – although Styxx says they are not really twins, they just shared the same womb.
  • Talon reveals that he losses him immortality, but retains his powers when his soul is returned to him.
  • Talon pull Acheron out of his destructive rampage with a hug. Talon realizes the speech that Acheron gave him earlier about retaining control was also meant for Acheron.
  • Artemis and Styxx argue. She gave him a perfect existence in the Elysian Fields and then on the Vanishing Isle, but he only spent time hating and plotting revenge on Acheron.
  • Acheron and Styxx’s fates are bound together. If one dies, they both do.
  • Acheron and Morrigan plotted to get Talon and Sunshine together to stop Dion, Camulus and Styxx.
  • Sunshine’s grandmother morphs into Morrigan.
  • Talon retains Dark-Hunter powers without being a Dark-Hunter.
  • Valerius recognizes that Zarek (a clean shaven Zarek) is his brother. Valerius blinded Zarek’s left eye when he was still human
  • Mnimi is the goddess of memory. She comes to Styxx when he is sent to Tatarus and gives Styxx Acheron’s memories of his life.

  6. […] Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Bad Moon Rising did not really meet my expectations. This isn’t exactly a bad thing. The story surprised me. It is the story of Fang and Aimee – and I guess that I was expecting it to actually take place in the chronological order of the books in the Dark-Hunter Series. I remember when Fang and Aimee met in Night Play – Vane Kattalakis and Bride McTierney’s story. I just assumed that their HEA would be coming years and years after they first met. Kenyon, instead, brought us back to the time of Night Play (taking place in 2003 per the book). During the course of this book, Vane and Bride become mated, Wren meets Maggie (from Unleash the Night), Talon and Sunshine are getting together (Night Embrace).
