Description from book:

His Powers – Inhuman

His Passion – Beyond Immortal . . .

All her life, Ashlyn Darrow has been tormented by voices from the past. To end the nightmare, she has come to Budapest seeking help from men rumored to have supernatural abilities, not knowing she’ll be swept into the arms of Maddox, their most dangerous member – a man trapped in a hell of his own.

Neither can resist the instant hunger that calms their torments. . . and ignites and irresistible passion. But every heated touch and burning kiss will edge them closer to destruction – and a soul-shattering test of love . . .

My Thoughts:

Wowsa!! If someone is looking for a book with a seriously tormented Alpha male, this is it. I’ve only recently started reading paranormal-type romances with gods involved. I’ve been reading about vampires, other demons, etc for a while. Demons and the like are tormented souls. However, creatures cursed by the gods are tormented on a whole new level. I started to get a feel for this phenomena in Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark-Hunter series (I still have Acheron on my to-be-read shelf – I’m hoping read more of the preceding novels before I tackle this tome). Showalter’slords of the underworld are all immotals cursed by the gods. Of these immortals, Maddox has what might be the worst curse I’ve ever seen. First, he has the demon Violence inside of him. All of the lords have demons from Pandora’s box inside of them as punishment for opening the box. Maddox, however, killed Pandora under Violence’s influence and was cursed by the gods yet again. Because of his curse, he must die violently every night by the hand of his friend and fellow lord, Reyes. Reyes has to stab Maddox six times every night and then leave him to die. Lucien, who contains the demon Death, must then escort Maddox to hell every evening. In the morning, Maddox wakes up knowing he will suffer the same fate the next night.

I’m telling you this guy is seriously cursed. I’m not sure what it is about cursed immortals who live on the edge, but I was enthralled by Maddox. Ashlyn was the perfect foil for his tormented soul. I have been passing over Gena Showalter’s books for a while now. I only bought this book (and The Darkest Kiss) because I felt like I needed to add more books to my eHarlequin.com order. I am so glad that I did buy these books. Maddox’s curse, Ashlyn’s need to protect and love Maddox and the resolution of his curse were wonderfully done. I admit that gods and their really bizarre and cruel behavior make me absolutely crazy. Titans? Greeks? Minor gods? It is all a bit mind boggling. It is also difficult to figure out who is good and who is bad – something that I think is a tendency of books with such gods.

Anyway, Maddox made me happy. I thoroughly enjoyed this book – and am now looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series. I wonder if I can find myself a tormented soul with a nice butterfly tattoo. Ohh yeah, my husband might not like that too much!

Read first August 2008
