Description from book:

The Nightwalkers have lived in the shadows of our world for centuries, gifted with abilities few humans can comprehend. For Noah, duty is all – until he meets the woman who is his destiny. . .

She will take him beyond his wildest dreams.

As Demon King, Noah is dedicated to protecting his kind from their human and Nightwalker enemies. Yet for six months he has struggled with vivid dreams that threaten his very sanity. Every night he’s tormented by images of a woman both achingly real and tantalizingly beyond his grasp. And his bone-deep need leaves him no choice but to force her to leave the life she’s known and enter a world beyond her imagining . . .

Every day, Kestra risks her life in perilous missions that veer just shy of the law, but she instinctively knows that the imposingly sensual figure before her is a danger unlike any she’s ever faced. Kestra has sworn never to trust or need another man, but Noah’s lightest touch scorches her with fevered desire, branding her as his mate, blinding them both to the terrifying truth. For within the ranks of their own people lies and adversary growing in number and power. And nothing and no one will be safe again . . .

My Thoughts:

I just happened to be walking through a Borders’ bookstore last weekend, when I noticed this book. Now, given that it isn’t supposed to be out (it is still only available to be pre-ordered through Amazon and Borders.com), I was a bit out of sorts. Naturally, I bought the book – and was very excited to be able to read it well before it’s release date. However, I get so annoyed when books are in stores early – with no way of knowing that the book is available other than by browsing the physical shelves. If I had not gone into that particular store on that day, I would still be waiting until September 2nd for the book – very frustrating!!!!!

In this case, I did count myself lucky. After all, I had something good to read last weekend. And, I do so enjoy the Nightwalkers series. I have been looking forward to Noah’s story – the Demon King who had to watch his closest advisors, friends and family find their true mates and move away from him. Finally, it is his turn to find his mate. Unfortunately, by the time he does locate Kestra, she has been murdered. Noah’s pain and anguish was quite something. His choice to use Corrine and baby Leah to manipulate time regardless of the danger is evidence of how far he will go in order to get his mate.

Fortunately, he is able to go back in time and save Kestra from death. However, that seems to be the easiest part of the plan. Kestra is a rather unique woman. She is a warrior in her own way – one who has learned to rely upon only herself in life. She isn’t sure what to make of Noah, but isn’t happy with him. Like Noah, she has been dreaming of them together for the past six months. She, of course, doesn’t understand the imprinting of demon mates and believes that Noah is deliberately doing something to her. I can say that I loved Noah and Kestra together. For most of the series, Noah has been the ruler – the calm one who always knows what is best. Yet, in Kestra he finds a challenge. His emotions are somewhat violent and disturbed. This is problematic for a fire demon who seems to have powers that he can’t quite control.

I will say that so far, Noah and Kestra are my favorite of the imprinted demons mates (out of Jacob and Isabella, Gideon and Magdalegna, Elijah and Siena, Damien and Syreena and Noah and Kestra). While I loved the development of their relationship, I was a bit disappointed in some aspects of the story. Ruth, the demon behind much of evil to stalk the Nightwalkers, doesn’t make an appearance. Instead, the bad guys in this book are rogue vampires that are trying to overthrow Damien after his marriage to a Lycanthrope princess. I had hoped to get some resolution of the Ruth issue given that Noah is supposed to be the last of the Nightwalker series. I know that Frank is continuing the mythos of this series by moving to deal with the Shadowalkers and that this booked began laying the foundation for this new series. However, I wish that with this new evil, there had been some resolution of the Ruth issue. I guess that I will just have to keep reading 🙂
