Description from book:

In Caldwell, New York, war rages between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers – six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Now the cold heart of a cunning predator will be warmed against its will . . .

Ruthless and brilliant, Vishous, son of the Bloodletter, possess a destructive curse and a frightening ability to see the future. As a pretrans growing up in his father’s war camp, he was tormented and abused. As a member of the Brotherhood, he has no interest in love or emotion, only the battle with the Lessening Society. But when a mortal injury puts him in the care of a human surgeon, Dr. Jane Whitcomb compels hi to reveal his inner pain and taste true pleasure for the first time – until a destiny he didn’t choose takes him into a future that cannot include her . . .

My Thoughts:

I have a confession to make: Vishous quickly became my favorite brother – and I was seriously tempted to read his story out of order. However, I waited – and am glad that I did. Vishous, like most of the brothers, has suffered many cruelties in his life. His father seemed to live to torment his son – and to encourage others to do so as well. As a result, love is not an emotion with which Vishous is terribly familiar. However, when he is taken to a human hospital after having been critically injured, he meets Dr. Jane Whitcomb. He has a vision of Jane and as such demands that his brothers take Jane when they come to rescue him. For the first part of the story, Jane is left in Vishous’ room in order to continue to treat his wounds. She isn’t happy about having been kidnapped and isn’t quite sure what to do about her situation.

This, of course, changes. Because Vishous knows that he will have to wipe Jane’s memory, he feels comfortable telling her about himself and his brothers. Jane becomes enmeshed in their lives and falls in love with Vishous. Vishous, unfortunately, has a secret. He has learned that the Scribe Virgin is him mother. He does not deal well with this knowledge. He does agree to act as the Primale of the race at her request. This means that he will take a mate among the Chosen and breed with her and her 39 sisters. Of course, his growing feelings for Jane make him regret his agreement to act as the Primale.

Anyway, I was deeply entranced by this book right up until Jane is shot by lessers. Because she was the heroine, I knew that she would have to come back in some form or another. However, I wasn’t particularly prepared for her to return as a ghost. That one threw me for a loop. I definitely have a thing against ghosts. I’m not sure why. It may have something to do with the fact that ghosts are one of the things that scared me silly as a young child. Regardless, I had to kind of pretend that Jane wasn’t a ghost to read the rest of the story. If not for the ghost thing, I would have thought that Vishous and Jane’s story was almost perfect. I loved the fact that Vishous needed to take Jane to the apartment where he brought women to dominate them sexually. The way he allowed Jane to restrain him was wonderfully done. I kind of just wish that Jane wasn’t a ghost. Oh well – I still loved the book.
