To Pleasure a Lady – Nicole Jordan

Jordan, Nicole. To Pleasure a Lady. (New York: Ballantine, 2008). ISBN – 9780345494597.

Main Characters: Marcus Pierce, Earl of Danvers and Arabella Loring

Related Works: This books is part of Nicole Jordan’s The Courtship Wars series. The books include the following: To Pleasure a Lady (the story of Marcus Pierce, Earl of Danvers and Arabella Loring), To Bed a Beauty (the story of Andrew Moncrief, the Duke of Arden and Rosyln Loring) and To Seduce a Bride (the story of Heath Griffin, Marquess of Claybourne and Lilian Loring).

Description from book:

Marcus Pierce, a strikingly handsome aristocrat with a wicked reputation, inherits guardianship of Arabella Loring and her two younger sisters – and immediately declares his intention to marry the off. But gorgeously defiant Arabella sparks frustration – and something deeply erotic – in Marcus. After matching both wits and swords with her, Marcus concludes that this beautiful and formidable woman must be his.

Having sworn off marriage and men, Arabella wishes to be left alone to run her finishing school for young ladies. To that end, she boldly accepts Marcus’s intimate challenge: If he can woo and win her within two weeks, she’ll take her place in his bed as his wife. However, if she can resist his considerable charms, the Loring sisters will be granted their independence. Thus an extraordinary game of seduction begins . . .

My Thoughts:

This book was great fun! Arabella Loring is a fairly independent woman – one who opened her own academy rather than face financial ruin. She does not believe that she nor her sisters need a guardian. However, Marcus Pierce plans to take his new duties seriously – by finding husbands for each of the girls. The girls strenuously object to this plan due to their own scars from the battle field that was their parents’ marriage. Arabella decides to face Marcus and his plans head on.

She hies off to his London town home to confront Marcus. This was definitely the scene that hooked me on this book. Arabella interrupts Marcus while he is fencing with his friends, Drew, the Duke of Arden and Heath, the Marquess of Claybourne. Shortly thereafter, Marcus travels to Danvers House to have it out with Arabella again. Here, they make their wager. Marcus has two weeks to try and convince Arabella to be his wife. If he fails, he will end his guardianship and allow the sisters to manage their own affairs.

All I can say is that it was an interesting two weeks. Marcus does his best to woo and charm Arabella. Of course, she is determined to resist him. But Marcus and Arabella are definitely meant to be together. Their path to true love certainly wasn’t easy, but it was fun to read about. Marcus and Arabella made a great pair. I can’t wait to read to the remaining stories in this series. Jordan did a wonderful job of introducing the characters from the next two books in the series – and I’m totally hooked.
