One Night With You – Sophie Jordan

Jordan, Sophie. One Night With You. (New York: Avon, 2008). ISBN – 9780061339264.

Main Characters: Lady Jane Guthrie and Seth Rutledge, the Earl of St. Claire

Description from book:

Anything can happen after dark . . .

Tired of being treated like a servant by her own family, Lady Jane Guthrie finally has a chance to escape . . . at a scandalous courtesans’ masquerade ball looking forward to her few hours of freedom. But when she sees Seth Rutledge, her skin begins to tingle with anticipation. Many years ago, Seth broke her heart by falling for her beautiful, title-hungry sister. But now here he is, right in front of her, offering her his lips . . .

Embittered by war, Seth returns home to inherit the title that would have once won him the woman of his dreams. Though duty demands he wed, he’s convinced passion no longer has a place in his life . . . until a masked siren sets his heart aflame. Desperate to find her again, he has no idea it’s his childhood friend Jane – and that after one night together their lives will never be the same.

My Thoughts:

This was a cute story. It had a Cinderella-sort-of-feel to it. Jane is a widow who is at the mercy of her wicked family – and licentious brother in law. She is at the beck and call of her family who treat her as if she were a paid servant. She is somewhat desperate to have her own life. One evening she sneaks out of the house with her three friends and attends a risque masquerade. There she is accosted by her brother in law, but meets Seth. She and Seth had been childhood friends, until he had fallen for Jane’s beautiful sister.

Seth and Jane somewhat circle about each other for a good portion of the book. Jane’s social life is seriously hampered by her family who try to keep her confined to the house. Her family is awful, and I kept hoping for some mysterious malady to strike them all. Seth is quite moody, having come back from war scarred and bitter. He isn’t to happy with Jane initially, despite the fact that his sister is quite fond of her. Of course, his antipathy doesn’t keep him from desiring Jane. Seth isn’t terribly happy when he Jane’s pregnancy forces them to marry. Fortunately, Seth vanquishes his anger, the evil in laws and admits his love for Jane.
