Pride and Prejudice – The Movie (2005)

I’ve always enjoyed the story of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. I first read the book in high school – admittedly one of the few that I actually did read. When the most recent movie version Pride and Prejudice came out, I was very excited to see it. I believe I purchased the DVD on Amazon as soon as it offered for sale. Since I received my copy, I have watched the movie hundreds of times. While I do enjoy Keira Knightley’s portrayal of Elizabeth Bennet, it is Matthew Macfayden and his take on Mr. Darcy that makes me love this movie. I could watch the scene where Darcy helps Elizabeth into the waiting carriage, their first touch, over and over again. I find it to be one of the most romantic movie moments of all time – ranking right behind Han Solo’s reply of “I know” to Princess Leia’s declaration of love in The Empire Strikes Back.

Many people that I know prefer the Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle version. While I am a fan of Colin Firth, I have a hard time seeing anyone other than Matthew Macfayden as Darcy. I have watched the Colin Firth mini-series (I even own a copy of the DVD) and do watch it when I have lots of time to sit – usually when I’m sick. The mini-series delves much deeper into the story – and sometimes I need to see this longer version. So many things get left out of the 2005 movie. But, it is still my favorite version. I must now go and watch the rest of the movie – Darcy and Elizabeth are just about to dance for the first time. Sigh!!
